IRONWORKER
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING

FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM

(WOMEN AND MINORITIES ARE URGED TO APPLY)

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must have the minimum of a high school education. Each applicant should also be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instruction in related training classes and to insure personal and co-worker safety on the job. At the time of making application, each applicant must present either a high school diploma, high school proficiency certificate, or a certificate showing satisfactory scores in the General Education Development Test (G.E.D.). Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements for G.E.D. testing. These arrangements can be made through the local school district office.

Applicants must be physically able to do work normally performed in the trade.
No guarantee of employment is implied. Applicants that are accepted will be added t an existing eligibility pool only.
The recruitment, selection employment, and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK PERFORMED BY IRONWORKERS
Tasks of the Ironworker include steel and cable reinforcing in concrete construction (rebar work), erections of steel skeleton of buildings, window wall and curtain wall exteriors, rigging of heavy machinery and welding in conjunction with all aspects of these job descriptions.
WAGES
Ironworker Apprentices start at 50% of the Journeyman’s pay scale and receive semi-annual increases based on their progress in the program. Apprentices also receive fringe benefits such as the health and welfare, pension, annuity and vacation plans.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ironworkers must be able to work at great heights. The work is very strenuous, dangerous, and is often done in adverse weather conditions. Work involves climbing, bending squatting, sitting, standing, and heavy lifting. At times work can be seasonal due to weather conditions or economic situations.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS
Ironworkers often work in a noisy environment due to working with or around air operated tools, heavy lifting machinery, compressors and welding machines. Among the hand tools required are wrenches, beaters (heavy hammers), bull pins,
sleever bars, wire cutters, tool belts, pouches and safety belts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
AGE Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age
EDUCATION High school graduate or passed the GED proficiency test
TESTS Not required to enter the program
JOB READINESS Applicants must be:
- physically able to perform the work of the trade.
- be prepared to work at extreme heights.
- be able to lift heavy material and equipment.
- be prepared to purchase required hand tools which will.
- cost approximately $350.00 to $400.00.
HELPFUL HIGH SCHOOL COURSES
Mathematics, mechanical drawing, metal shop and physical fitness.
CONDITIONS OF TRAINING PROGRAM
Apprenticeship is served for a four-year period, which includes a minimum of 480 hours of related classroom instruction and 6,000 hours on-the-job-training.
PLACEMENT METHOD
Accepted applicants are placed in an eligibility pool in numerical order. Employer may sponsor applicants from the eligibility pool regardless of their numerical position in the pool.
IRONWORKER JOB DESCRIPTION
1. High School Diploma or equal (G.E.D.)
2. Sign up with local union apprenticeship program.
3. Must pass drug test (at applicant’s expense) prior to acceptance in apprenticeship program.
4. Attend apprenticeship school for four years, while working on the job.
A. Take off work and go to school for a week period.
B. Make up for any failed classes.
C. Must pass all class tests to be advanced to next pay period.
D. Must pass all classes over a four-year period to become a journey person ironworker.
E. If you cannot meet apprenticeship requirements, you will be dropped form the
program and will be terminated from employment.
5. Must have transportation to get to assigned job sites.
6. Must be reliable to get to work on time, ready with all tools to do a day of good work.
7. Must be physically strong and agile enough to do repetitive work for prolonged periods of time.
A. Carry heavy loads of rebar on shoulder from storage area where it is being installed.
B. Must bend over for long periods of time, while reinforcing steel together.
C. Must be agile enough to walk over voided spaces while stepping on steel intersections
while tying and carrying steel.
D. Must be able to climb steel walls while carrying and tying steel.
E. Must follow direction from foreman or lead person.
F. Must work in a safe manner and follow all safety orders.
